Bittersweet is not a powerful enough word to describe how we are ending 2019 and beginning 2020. It lacks oomph both on the bitter side and the sweet side. Perhaps a better word is simply, new.
For those of you who don’t know what Picnic Grounds is, I’ll fill you in a bit…
I moved to the Antelope Valley (CA) 3 years ago to live with my now fiancé. I didn’t have a job lined up, but I did have an undeniable yearning to own an outdoor café and call it Picnic Grounds. With zero business experience, I started by selling coffee at outdoor events. Since then, Picnic Grounds has evolved into a mobile espresso bar + local bottled latte distributor, with plans in place to grow into that outdoor café someday.
The Antelope Valley has been extremely good to Picnic Grounds and I. The community is made up of supportive people who are stoked about small business. The town is big enough for entrepreneurs to gain traction but small enough to keep us from getting swallowed up. It is also located far enough from Los Angeles to stand a part from the crowd and close enough to maintain connections with the big city. I am beyond thankful that this was the birthplace for Picnic Grounds.
The bittersweet part:
After Christmas, Picnic Grounds will be migrating from the Antelope Valley of California to the East Valley of Arizona.
My fiancé and myself are moving our fur child, our future child, and our small businesses to the sunny city of Gilbert, AZ.
We are so excited.
We are so sad.
This blog is an ode to all who have been a part of our journey over the last few years. My hope is that you know how much you mean to me.
While there will be no more Picnic Grounds Coffee Bar or Bottled Lattes in the Antelope Valley for a while, I would recommend getting your specialty coffee fix from a few of my favorite local businesses:
- Corvo Coffee Roasters – the coffee roasters that Picnic Grounds has worked with since day one. Without Corvo, there would be no PG. You can order their beans whole or pre-ground, depending on how you home-brew.
- Day Dreamers Coffee Roasters – a brand new specialty coffee roaster in town that is passionate about ethical coffee as well as giving back to the community. Their coffee is divine.
- La Cafeteria – the only other mobile coffee cart in town! They serve Stumptown Coffee from an epic La Marzocco espresso machine. That combo makes for damn good brew.
- The Modern Tea Room – while their specialty is tea, they serve Corvo Coffee in their mouth watering Dirty Chai. It’s 100% worth a try.
While we are closing out a pivotal chapter in 2019, we are opening our hearts to newness in 2020. I’m not going to lie… circumstances like surprise pregnancy and completely restarting business in another state seemed quite bitter, at first. But challenges most often ignite change. And change — whether we realize it or not — can yield the sweetest results.
If you’ve made it this far, I would love to hear from you! Are you welcoming any change with the New Year? Please share in the comments or reach out directly!
As for my Arizona peeps, get ready to get your sip on! Picnic Grounds is SO eager to be a part of the coffee community in AZ, and we cannot wait to serve y’all. Please reach out if you’d like to collaborate, link up, share ideas, etc.
A special thanks to my future in laws: Picnic Grounds would not be possible without your love and support. Thank you for giving me a family to come back to in the Antelope Valley.
